Jeannine B. Blais, 1934 - 2014

Jeannine B. Blais, 80, of 100 Campus Avenue, Lewiston, died Tuesday, October 21, 2014, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, while receiving the sacrament of anointing from her son. She was born in Lewiston June 6, 1934, the daughter of the late Sylvio Gauthier and Gabrielle Audette. On September 9, 1950, she married Paul J. Blais at Ss. Peter & Paul Church, where she was a member her entire life. Her husband died in 1982. She was employed for several years in the maternity ward at St. Mary’s Hospital. Survivors include her seven children; Denis, Lucille and her husband Andre Latulippe, Roger, Richard, Roland and his wife Suzanne, Rachel, a Sister of Charity from West Virginia, and Paul and his wife Wendy. …

Albert T. Spugnardi, 81, formerly of 487 College Street, Lewiston died Monday, October 20, 2014, at the Montello Manor Nursing Home, where he had been a resident for the past 6 years.  Born in Lewiston on January 29, 1933, he was the son of Joseph and Eldora Lotti Spugnardi. He was educated at St. Joseph’s School, and was a graduate of Lewiston High School, Class of ’50. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955, and on July 19, 1952, he married the former Marianna King. After his discharge from the service, he went to work as a route salesman for Snow’s Tire Company. …

Roger A. Cote, 86, of 100 Campus Avenue, Lewiston, formerly of 47 Winding Way, Lewiston, died Friday, October 17, 2014, at the Marshwood Nursing Home in Lewiston, where he had been a resident since this past April. Born in Lewiston on December 16, 1927, he was the son of Elisee and Alice (Veilleux) Cote. Educated in local schools, he joined the U.S. Marine Corp in 1948. He stayed in the Marine Corps for twenty years, and was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars, earning two Purple Hearts. In 1952 he married the former Gilberte Picard. After retiring from the Corps, he worked as a truck driver for Vincent Fruit Company, and then in the maintenance department of St. …

Rita Y. (Roy) Houle, 92, of Auburn, passed away on October 12, 2014, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. She was born in Lewiston on August 12, 1922, to Frank and Marie Imelda Lepage Roy.  She grew up in Lewiston and graduated from Lewiston High School and Acme Business College.  Rita was a pioneer in her day. She began her career at the Brunswick Naval Air Station in personnel, and later transferred to Togus Veterans Hospital where she worked in the prosthetic department for over 35 years. She was a beloved mother, memere, sister, and “ma tante". …

Rita M. Brunelle, 85, of Lewiston, died Tuesday, October 14, 2014, in her home following a brief illness. Born in Lewiston August 6, 1929 to Arthur E. Lessard and Bella E. Maillette. Rita attended Holy Family School, graduating eighth grade in 1942, and was a member of the Lewiston High School Class of ’46. In February 1947 she went to work at Davis Cadillac as a secretary.  She married Robert L. Brunelle of Auburn on August 6, 1955. In 1958, after working eleven years, she left to have a baby, their only child. She returned to work part-time when called upon to give a helping hand. …

Natalie Deane Cohen, 91, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2014, at Clover Health Care in Auburn, where she had been a resident for the past six years. Born in Lewiston on February 4, 1923, she was the daughter of Benjamin and Bertha Drobofski Deane. Natalie was educated in local schools, graduated from Lewiston High School, Class of ’40, and Bliss Business College. She was married to her loving husband William B. Cohen for 47 years, who predeceased her in 1993. Natalie moved to Washington D.C. following her graduation from Bliss Business College and was employed by the U.S. …

Norma L. Holmberg Simard died at her home in Auburn, Maine on September 29, 2014 surrounded by family and friends. Norma was born June 2, 1921 in Pittsfield, MA, the daughter of Eleanor and Gustave Holmberg. She graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1939 and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1943. Upon graduation with a B.S. in Bacteriology, Norma worked at Pittsfield General Hospital. Preferring research over the hospital environment, she moved on to penicillin research at American Cyanamid Lederle Labs in Stamford, CT. It was there she met her husband. …

Lorraine T. Philippon, 88, of 23 Spofford Street, Lewiston, died unexpectedly on Thursday, October 2, 2014, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, with her loving family by her side. Born in Lewiston on May 13, 1926, she was the daughter of Albert and Albertha Ouellette Tremblay. Educated in local schools, she married Ange J. Philippon on September 16, 1944. They spent 57 loving years together, until Ange’s passing in 2002. For many of those years they co-owned and operated the T.J. Murphy Fur Company in Lewiston. Family was everything to Lorraine, and she especially loved spending time with her sister and best friend, Connie. …

Paige J. Jones, 15, of 96 High Street, Auburn, died in her home on Thursday, September 25, 2014, following an eight year battle with metachromatic leukodystrophy, and surrounded by her loving family. Born in Lewiston on May 6, 1999, she was the daughter of John B. Jones and Corinna M. Chevalier. Besides her father and mother, she is survived by two brothers, Christopher Poulin and Isaiah Anderson, both of Auburn, five sisters; Jessica and husband Joe Gammon of New Gloucester, Kirstie Teague of Lewiston, Shayli Poulin of Lewiston, and Jordan and Emma Jones, both of Auburn, maternal grandmother, Anne Marie Garey of Cartwright, OK, paternal grandfather Ralph Jones of Auburn, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. …

Shirley D. Karahalios, 86, formerly of 255 Central Avenue, Lewiston, died Saturday, September 20, 2014, at the d’Youville Pavilion in Lewiston. Born in Lewiston on August 8, 1928, she was the daughter of Richard and Viola Caouette Driscoll. Educated in local schools, she was a graduate of Lewiston High School, Class of ’46. On September 6, 1953 she married John Karahalios. Prior to the birth of her son in 1960, she worked for 16 years at New England Telephone Company, first as an operator and later as a service representative in the business office. After her children were in high school, she returned to the workforce and spent 22 years as office manager in the accounting practice of her brother-in-law, Tony Karahalios. …
