Claire M. Lagace, 1929 - 2016

Claire M. Lagace, 87, of Lewiston, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 18, 2016, with her family at her side, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center. She was born in Lewiston on July 27, 1929, a daughter of Maurice and Marie Anne Aubut Malo. Claire graduated from Lewiston High School, Class of ’46, and progressed to the Auburn Maine School of Commerce, where she graduated in 1948. Upon graduation, she was employed in the office of W.S. Libbey Co. for ten years, and then went to work as a bookkeeper for her husband’s business until his retirement. She had been a lifetime communicant of Holy Family Church, Prince of Peace Parish, and was a choir member for over 61 years, after which she joined the Holy Family Funeral Choir. …

Lucien A. Asselin, 1927 - 2016

Lucien A. Asselin, 89, of Lewiston, died at Marshwood Nursing Home in Lewiston on October 15th, 2016, following a short illness. Born in Lewiston on March 17, 1927, he was the son of Wilfred and Alice Berube Asselin. He served in the US Navy during Wold War II, worked for many years for the Androscoggin Sheriff’s Department, and after retiring became a constable and served papers for area lawyers. He was predeceased by his wife, Yolande, in 2005, and his son Daniel in 2016. He leaves behind a sister, Jackie Duclos and husband Normand of Berlin, NH, sister-in-law Jackie Laurie of Lewiston, his partner of ten years, Annette Beauchesne, along with many nieces and nephews. 

Leonard David Bell, 1927 - 2016

Leonard David Bell, noted philanthropist, entrepreneur, and political activist, was born in Lewiston, Maine, on January 19, 1927 and passed away in Boca Raton, Florida, at the age of 89 on October 5, 2016. Leonard lived his first forty years in his native Maine where he graduated from Lewiston High School and attended Bowdoin College. He received his B. A. in 1947. An engaging and charismatic figure, he held many leadership roles on campus, including business manager of the school newspaper and chair of the Red Cross drive. Upon graduation, Leonard and his brother, Irving, founded Rose Woven Label Company (later renamed Bell Manufacturing Company). …

Edith Oestrich, 1928 - 2016

Edith Oestrich, 88, formerly of Brunswick, died Sunday, October 2, 2016, at the Highlands Living Facility in Topsham, where she had been a resident since March.  Born in Germany on September 7, 1928, she was the daughter of Herman and Lea Kujawski Wallach. She came to the United States after World War II, and in 1949 married Ralph Oestrich in New York City. Mr. Oestrich passed away on July 14, 2006. She was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. She loved having friends and family over to her house, and was famous for her dinner parties. Edith and her husband travelled all over the world during their marriage, but for her nothing compared to the coast of Maine. …

Suzanne B. DeBlois, 1947 - 2016

Suzanne B. Deblois, 69, of 13 Mt. Hope Avenue, Lewiston, died at her home on Monday, September 26, 2016. Born in Lewiston on January 12, 1947, she was the daughter of Eddie and Marie Turcotte DeBlois. Educated in local schools, she was a graduate of Lewiston High School, Class of ’65. She worked as a nurse for several years, then worked as a secretary for the Isaacson & Raymond Law Firm, and later the Lewiston Public Works Department, and finally spent many years as a transcriptionist at Tri-County Mental Health. Survivors include several cousins and close friends, especially June Michaud and Lou Samson, both of Lewiston. …

Rolande I. LeClair, 95, A former resident of 5 Lafayette Street, Lewiston, passed away peacefully in the company of family and friends Tuesday, September 27, 2016, while a hospice patient at d’Youville Pavilion in Lewiston, following a period of declining health. She was born in Lewiston on January 5, 1921, the only child of Auguste and Alexina “Blanche” Morin Maillet. Educated in Lewiston schools, she was the valedictorian of her class at Acme Business College. She worked variously over the years for the City of Lewiston, Roy Brothers Transportation, Hudson Bus Lines and Lewiston Lumber Company, a job she particularly enjoyed and from which she finally retired. …

Constance D. Labrie, 81, a resident of Clover Manor in Auburn and a former longtime resident of Sabattus Street in Lewiston, died Monday, September 26, 2016, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. Born in Lewiston on September 17, 1935, she was the daughter of Edward and Lillian Bazinet Dostie. She was educated in local schools, and as a young woman entered the convent and studied to be a nun. She left the convent after a couple of years because of illness, and eventually met the love of her life, Gerald L. “Bud” Labrie. They were married on July 21, 1956. …

Dominick J. Ranucci, 93, formerly of 104 Davis Avenue in Auburn, and a resident of the Woodlands Memory Care Facility in Lewiston for the past year, died at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice in Auburn on Monday, September 26, 2016. Born in Harlem, NYC on September 12, 1923, he was the son of Italian immigrants Giuseppe and Irena Fiorello Ranucci. Educated in Harlem and Bronx schools, he worked for many years as a draftsman for the Duralab Corporation in Brooklyn, designing laboratory furniture and equipment. In 1948 he married Marie Abbattista and they had a daughter, Irene. …

Rita M. Koss, 68, formerly of Mechanic Falls, died in Lewiston on Thursday, September 22, 2016, at the d’Youville Pavilion , where she has been a resident since 2012. Born in Lewiston on March 19, 1948, she was the daughter of Julien A. and Antoinette Dubois Desrosiers. Educated in local schools, she worked for a few years at Hillcrest Farms, and then spent many years working in the cafeteria at Bates College prior to her retirement. On August 11, 1995, she married Leo Koss of Mechanic Falls. Rita enjoyed crochet, puzzles, cooking for her family and friends, visits to Baileys Island, and volunteering at the Good Shepherd’s Food Bank, but her greatest enjoyment came from time spent with her large extended family. …

Pearl M. Coyne, 99, of 276 Gamage Avenue, Auburn, died Thursday, September 22, 2016, at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice Services. Born in Auburn on January 2, 1917, she was the daughter of Frank and Albina Normandeau Coyne. She was educated in Auburn schools, and was a graduate of Edward Little High School, Class of ’35. After graduation, Pearl went to work as a salesperson at the B. Peck Department Store for several years, and then worked in the offices of Shapiro Brothers in Auburn for seventeen years. She then worked in the Lunch Program of the Auburn School Department for seven years before retiring. …
