John R. Swindells, 1923 - 2014

John Richard Swindells, “Bumpa,” 90, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2014 at the Veterans’ Home in Augusta, where he was surrounded by his family.  He was born on November 16, 1923 in Lewiston, Maine.  He was the son of James and Alice Burpee Swindells.  John grew up in Lewiston.  He was awarded his high school diploma in 2001. At age 17, John enlisted in the United States Marine Corps to serve his country in World War II.  He went to Boot Camp on Paris Island in South Carolina, where he learned to be a 50 caliber machine gunner.  From San Diego, California, John was deployed to the Pacific Theatre for over five years.  …

Barbara Lucille Connor, 92, formerly of 27 Julie Street, Poland died Monday, October 27, 2014, at the Montello Manor Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since August. Born in Lewiston on April 27, 1922, she was the daughter of Michael T. and Marjorie Ham Harkins, Sr. She was educated at local schools, and was a graduate of Lewiston High School. On June 30, 1949, she married Eugene D. Connor. Over the course of her working life she was the manager of the Photo Studio at B. Peck Company in Lewiston, ME, co-manager of the White Sewing Machine Department at England Brothers Department Store in Pittsfield, MA, where she also served as the Cosmetic Buyer, Stationery Buyer, and ran the Christmas department for many years. …

Francois Joseph Labonte, 94, of 4 Bradford Street, Lewiston, died Friday, October 24, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital. Born in on August 28, 1920, he was the son of Arthur and Henriette Forgues Labonte. He served in the U.S. Navy as a 2nd class seaman. On October 19, 1940, he married his soulmate, Gertrude Cote. He worked at Northern Utilities Gas Company for over 30 years, retiring in 1980. He spent 25 years enjoying wintering in St. Petersburg, Florida. He enjoyed family, playing cards and was a lifelong Red Sox fan. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife of 69 years, Gertrude, daughter Jeannette Letourneau, brothers Wilfred and Father Youville and his sister Yolande Deschenes. …

Gracia E. Mercier, 84, a resident of Greene, died Saturday, October 25, 2014, at d’Youville Pavilion in Lewiston. Born in Lewiston on January 13, 1930, she was the daughter of Emile and Marguerite Flynn Theriault. Educated in Auburn schools, she was married to Antonin “Tony” Mercier at St. Patrick’s Chapel on August 3, 1957. Mr. Mercier passed away on February 13, 2009. She enjoyed family get-togethers, reading, boating, and all outdoor activities, both work and play. A devout Catholic, Gracia attended the Paraclete prayer group at Holy Family Church for over 30 years. …

Jeannine B. Blais, 80, of 100 Campus Avenue, Lewiston, died Tuesday, October 21, 2014, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, while receiving the sacrament of anointing from her son. She was born in Lewiston June 6, 1934, the daughter of the late Sylvio Gauthier and Gabrielle Audette. On September 9, 1950, she married Paul J. Blais at Ss. Peter & Paul Church, where she was a member her entire life. Her husband died in 1982. She was employed for several years in the maternity ward at St. Mary’s Hospital. Survivors include her seven children; Denis, Lucille and her husband Andre Latulippe, Roger, Richard, Roland and his wife Suzanne, Rachel, a Sister of Charity from West Virginia, and Paul and his wife Wendy. …

Albert T. Spugnardi, 81, formerly of 487 College Street, Lewiston died Monday, October 20, 2014, at the Montello Manor Nursing Home, where he had been a resident for the past 6 years.  Born in Lewiston on January 29, 1933, he was the son of Joseph and Eldora Lotti Spugnardi. He was educated at St. Joseph’s School, and was a graduate of Lewiston High School, Class of ’50. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955, and on July 19, 1952, he married the former Marianna King. After his discharge from the service, he went to work as a route salesman for Snow’s Tire Company. …

Roger A. Cote, 86, of 100 Campus Avenue, Lewiston, formerly of 47 Winding Way, Lewiston, died Friday, October 17, 2014, at the Marshwood Nursing Home in Lewiston, where he had been a resident since this past April. Born in Lewiston on December 16, 1927, he was the son of Elisee and Alice (Veilleux) Cote. Educated in local schools, he joined the U.S. Marine Corp in 1948. He stayed in the Marine Corps for twenty years, and was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars, earning two Purple Hearts. In 1952 he married the former Gilberte Picard. After retiring from the Corps, he worked as a truck driver for Vincent Fruit Company, and then in the maintenance department of St. …

Rita Y. (Roy) Houle, 92, of Auburn, passed away on October 12, 2014, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. She was born in Lewiston on August 12, 1922, to Frank and Marie Imelda Lepage Roy.  She grew up in Lewiston and graduated from Lewiston High School and Acme Business College.  Rita was a pioneer in her day. She began her career at the Brunswick Naval Air Station in personnel, and later transferred to Togus Veterans Hospital where she worked in the prosthetic department for over 35 years. She was a beloved mother, memere, sister, and “ma tante". …

Rita M. Brunelle, 85, of Lewiston, died Tuesday, October 14, 2014, in her home following a brief illness. Born in Lewiston August 6, 1929 to Arthur E. Lessard and Bella E. Maillette. Rita attended Holy Family School, graduating eighth grade in 1942, and was a member of the Lewiston High School Class of ’46. In February 1947 she went to work at Davis Cadillac as a secretary.  She married Robert L. Brunelle of Auburn on August 6, 1955. In 1958, after working eleven years, she left to have a baby, their only child. She returned to work part-time when called upon to give a helping hand. …

Natalie Deane Cohen, 91, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2014, at Clover Health Care in Auburn, where she had been a resident for the past six years. Born in Lewiston on February 4, 1923, she was the daughter of Benjamin and Bertha Drobofski Deane. Natalie was educated in local schools, graduated from Lewiston High School, Class of ’40, and Bliss Business College. She was married to her loving husband William B. Cohen for 47 years, who predeceased her in 1993. Natalie moved to Washington D.C. following her graduation from Bliss Business College and was employed by the U.S. …
