Harry E. Angelides

Life Story

Harry E. Angelides, 94, of Lewiston, passed away peacefully at Schooner Estates in Auburn, surrounded by family, on Wednesday, June 13, 2018.

He was born in Ellsworth on August 25, 1923, the son of the late Michael and Aliki (Moskovis) Angelides. He grew up in Ellsworth and attended Ellsworth High. He later attended and graduated from University of Maine at Orono where he excelled in both Baseball and basketball. While at UMO he served as president to the Kappa Sigma Fraternity as well as the Sophomore Owls honor society

Harry enlisted in the Army Air Corps and proudly served his country during World War II.

After college, Harry played triple A baseball and In 1945 Harry was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies. An unfortunate accident during a preseason game ended his baseball career. Harry was inducted to the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame (1977) as well as the Lewiston Auburn Sports Hall of Fame (2006) for his accomplishments in Baseball.

Ever the athlete, Harry later became an avid golfer and served as both president and board member to the Maine State Golf Association as well as President to the Martindale Country Club Board of Directors for a number of years. Harry also served on the executive committee of the New England Golf Association

Harry worked in Life Insurance for his entire professional life and most of those years with Union Mutual (later becoming UNUM) until going out on his own.

In 1950 Harry married Julia Kasregis and together they raised a family of three children.

Harry will be remembered for his passion of playing baseball and golf but was most proud of his family and the wonderful friends he made throughout his lifetime. He will be sadly missed by many.

He is survived by his wife of almost 68 years, Julia of Lewiston, His three children, son Michael and wife Susan, Connecticut, daughter Susan  Angelides and her partner, Maury Balcom , Arizona and Washington, and daughter Aliki Caraganis and husband Alfred, Connecticut. He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews-

He was predeceased by his mother and father and his brother James.
