Irene A. Gauthier

Life Story

Irene A. Gauthier, 88, of 35 Raiche Street, Lewiston, died at her home on Tuesday, June 4, 2013. Born in Lewiston on July 19, 1924, she was the daughter of Omer and Armosa Dubois Mathieu. Educated in local schools, she married J. Paul Gauthier on June 8, 1946. Mr. Gauthier passed away on October 4, 1999. A talented seamstress, she worked for many years Star Millinery & Cloak Store on Lisbon Street in Lewiston. A member of Holy Family Church, Prince of Peace Parish, she also belonged to the Lewiston Senior Citizens, and enjoyed playing Beano, Pinochle, and cards with her family and many friends. Her greatest joy came from time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include a son, Claude and wife Joan of Lewiston, two daughters, Patricia and husband Richard Cloutier, and Suzanne and husband Michael Cliche, all of Lewiston, five brothers; Jean-Paul Mathieu and wife Alma, Gerard Mathieu and wife Jackie, and Marcel Mathieu and wife Irene, all of Lewiston, Rene Mathieu and wife Pauline of Fayette, and Maurice Mathieu and wife Gemma of Fall River, MA, two sisters, Carmen Goupil of Lewiston, and Pauline and husband Victor Bernier of Arcadia, FL, six grandchildren; James Gauthier and wife Donna, Kim and husband James Karlis, Jason Cloutier and wife Shari, Todd Cloutier, Stephanie and husband Charles Nettles, and David Gravel, seven great-grandchildren; Emma, Evan, and Ella Karlis, Benjamin and Ashley Cloutier, and Ryan and Kaylee Nettles, and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Armand Mathieu, a sister, Marie Mercier, companion Larry Duval, and a great-grandson, James Cloutier.
