Janet H. Wright

Life Story

Janet, or Rosie to some, age 91, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Woodlands Senior Living Center in Lewiston, Maine November 28, 2020.

She was born in Millinocket, Maine on April 4, 1929 to French and Swedish parents Laura (Mayo) and Knut Olaf Johnson.  She attended Stearns High School and graduated valedictorian of the class of 1946.  Jan started working for Bangor and Aroostook railroad after high school where she met her future husband Wilfred (Willie) Wright.  They married in May 1952.    After some time, they decided to pull up stakes and move to California, but the calling for home and family was strong, and they moved back to Maine several years later and resettled in Millinocket, Willie getting a job with Great Northern Paper Company and her taking a job as secretary to the high school principal at Stearns High School.  For 20 years she would run the principal’s office, doing everything from daily announcements and report cards, to accounting.  Over the course of her 20 year career, she would meet and remember every student that passed through the school, many of them remembering her years after graduation.

After raising their two children and Willie’s retirement in 1985, they bought a place in Zephyrhills, Florida, a place they would call their winter home and spend the next 17 winters golfing, playing cards, flea marketing, and enjoying the winter sun with other snowbirds until Willie’s passing in 2003. She continued to winter there for the next 16 years until her illness moved her to Woodlands Senior Living in Lewiston, Maine in 2019.

Mom was a wonderful cook, making homemade dinners for the family every night for as long as we can remember.  She was an excellent seamstress and spent many a winter night in the living room of our Michigan St. home with dress patterns spread out on it, then retire to the bedroom and with the help of the 40 year old Singer transform them into wonderful creations.  She was also very proud of her hole in one at the local golf course.  Janet was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a group she held close to her heart. She was a member of the Millinocket Players during the 70’s and 80’s and with her close friends Anna Mae Bertrand, and Shirley Cook and many others, they were to help produce many of the memorable productions done by the group with many happy memories.  She also enjoyed her weekly Bridge games with the ladies.

Janet is survived by her two children, Wilfred Earl Wright and wife Michelle of Deltona, Florida and Jana Wright and fiancé Ken Topel of Windham, Maine.  Two granddaughters very close to her heart Erin Bouttenot and husband Dan of Standish, Maine and Beth Anne Wright of Deltona, Florida.  Several cousins David Nickless of Jamaica and Jon Nickless.

Mom was predeceased by her parents Knut Olaf Johnson and Laura (Mayo) Johnson.  Her husband Wilfred (Willie) Wright, a dear sister Lillian and her husband Bert Nickless killed in a car accident in 1963, a brother Kenneth Johnson.

Rest now Mom, a job well done, join Dad, Nana, Gaga and many, many friends and family that have gone on before you.  Janet was proud of her Swedish heritage, she was the last of the Johnsons.  She leaves behind friends both in Maine and Florida who will remember her through pictures and memories.

Committal will be in the spring, she will be laid to rest in the Millinocket Cemetery.
