Morris Silverman

Life Story

Morris Silverman, 82, of Auburn, passed away on December 10, 2015, at the Hospice House in Auburn.

Morris was the son of Louis Silverman and Frances (Brownstone) Silverman. He was a lifelong Lewiston-Auburn resident, graduating from Lewiston High School, and attending University of Maine at Orono before taking over the family clothing business. Morris was a pillar of the local business community, with a retail career that spanned 65 years. His flagship store, Louie’s Clothing, was a fixture on Lisbon Street for approximately 50 years before moving to its current Center Street, Auburn location. At its peak, Morris owned and operated 4 stores in Lewiston, including Louie’s, Edwards, The Barefoot Trader, and Bargainland USA.

Morris is survived by Adele, his wife of 59 years, a son, Louis of Newport Beach, California and his wife Debbie, a daughter, Nancy (Levinsky) of Portland, Maine and her husband Ken and 4 grandchildren, Andrea, Gregory, Sara and Sam. He is also survived by his brother, Arthur Silverman and his wife Donna, residents of New York City.

Morris was at his happiest helping his many loyal customers, and never considered retirement. His work was both his vocation and his avocation, and he considered his customers to be both his friends and extended family. Morris was in his store writing his advertisements and helping his customers until just before Thanksgiving.

Morris was also a determined advocate for Temple Shalom , and was an active member of Temple committees at the time of his death.
