Wilfred M. Chouinard

Life Story

Wilfred M. Chouinard, 79, of Lewiston, died at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice in Auburn on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, with his family by his side. Born in Lewiston on February 16, 1940, he was the son of Arthur and Irene Boisvert Chouinard. He attended school in Lewiston and was a graduate of Lewiston High School, Class of ’59. He married the love of his life, the former Joan Sampson, in 1960. Wilfred worked as a masonry contractor for many years, first for himself, and then, starting in 1986, for Bates College, retiring in 2007. He loved cars, and in 1972 became a founding member of the Downeast Street Rod Club. However, his greatest source of pride and joy were his seven children. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially camping/sailing at Sebago, enjoyed golfing with his “buddies”, and watching NASCAR. In his early years, Wilfred enjoyed drag racing at Oxford Plain Dragway and watching his brother and nephews later in his life. He completed his “bucket list” with a cross-country drive in 2016. Everyone knew Dad for his “Train Hat” and sense of humor. Kind and generous, he was always there to lend a helping hand. Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Joan of Lewiston, two sons, Michael and wife Donna, and David and wife Denise, five daughters, Diane Norman, Cynthia and husband Mark Gagne, Karen and husband Darrell Gray, Kim and husband Joe Eastman, and Nancy Chouinard, three sisters, Camilla Bosse, Claire Chouinard, and Irene Therrien and husband Rudy, a brother, Norman and wife Joline, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and his cat Rusty.  Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Robert.

Dad, we will love, honor and miss you, but we know you will always look after us.
